SLUM DEVELOPMENT

“Integrated Programme for the poor living in slums and settlements in and around the Howrah Municipal Dumps”
is another initiative of CLPOAtaken up this year with support of GOAL. The initiative envisaged integrated development
of the disadvantaged communities (especially children) through synchronized intervention on thematic areas of health,
education, empowerment and livelihood

“Integrated Programme for the poor living in slums and settlements in and around the Howrah Municipal Dumps”is another initiative of CLPOAtaken up this year with support of GOAL. The initiative envisaged integrated developmentof the disadvantaged communities (especially children) through synchronized intervention on thematic areas of health,education, empowerment and livelihood. The main activities conducted in the programme are:

Health Interventions

  • Strengthening community level institution through capacity building of identified community volunteers who will start referral of women and children for accessing reproductive health services.
  • Establishing linkage with the borough and Ward level health units to facilitate ‘community health’ services in the area.
  • Community led advocacy with local government for ensuring additional sanitation facilities at the community level Triggering community (especially mothers of children < 5 years)on hand washing and bring changes in the behaviour and practice.
  • Strengthening of community WASH committees to ensure access to new WASH resources and maintenance of existing ones

Children’s Empowerment and Protection

  • Building community awareness on ‘adolescent health and entitlements’ through disseminating information on availability of health services in neighborhood on different health schemes and entitlements.
  • Conducting life skill education classes with adolescents and youth.
  • Ensuring elementary educational rights through back-up support to mainstreamed children and improved education services in schools through strengthening of MTAs etc.
  • Networking with the formal school authorities to ensure retention of mainstreamed children
  • Sharing the issues related to child protection with the Govt. authorities responsible for ensuring protection in the area and establishing linkages with the EVCYs and the Govt. bodies.
  • Developing a mechanism of community based informal institutions like peer group, locality monitoring groups for reporting of abuse and early marriages prevalent in the community.
  • Involving the EVCYs in ‘skill building programme’ and organizing them in SHGs to increase community cohesiveness, promote formal saving habits.
  • Tailoring & Beautician were selected as trades for skill building.
  • Developing business plan for promoting a self- sustained business with these groups.

Livelihood

  • Expanding and improving availability and access to diversified income sources.
  • Formation &linkage of SHGwith banks.
  • Training ofSHGmembers for handling daily expenses.
  • Providing financial support for business development.
  • Providing functional literacy classes
