CHILDLINE – a national, toll free, 24–hour emergency telephone helpline service for children in need of care and protection. Any child/concerned adult can dial 1098 to access this service. The CHILDLINE number 1098 is common in all the cities of India. Initially started in Mumbai in June 1996, CHILDLINE is currently operational in 83 cities of India spread across 25 states. The project is supported by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India. CLPOA as the Nodal Organization of Kolkata CHILDLINE coordinates the CHILDLINE activities in the cities of Kolkata and Howrah and in working with six other partner organizations.

Operational Structure of CHILDLINE

Kolkata CHILDLINE has so far been received 8,53,000 calls since its inception.

The telephone has installed in two Collaborative Organizations namely CINI-ASHA and Don Bosco Ashalayam. The other four Support organizations are Loreto Day School, Sealdah, IPER, BLC,SEED who are working as the support organizations. CHILDLINE aims to reach out to the most marginalized children and provides interventions of shelter, medical, repatriation, rescue, death related, sponsorships, emotional support and guidance.

City Coordinator of the Kolkata CHILDLINE belongs to CLPOA and pays visits to all six organizations partnering to CHILDLINE activities. Regular liaision activities with other stakeholders like Calcutta Telephones, Police, Child Welfare Committee, Directorate of Social Welfare are carried out by the City Coordinator.

  • Launch of Child Friendly Car – “Amader Gari”
